Importance of Keywords in Search Engine Optimization

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on June 17, 2008

Since the keywords are the root element of any search engine optimization process, so it becomes necessary to take it as the first and most important thing for optimization. Since all search queries are based on the keywords inserted in the search engines, so one must be careful and should select the most relevant keywords for his/her website.
If the SEO is to make your site visible in the search rankings then the keywords are what around which the entire SEO process revolve. A wrong selection of keywords may ruin your entire seo work as whatever you will do after it will be based on these keywords. So you must be careful at this first and far most important point.
The following points can be helpful for finding the appropriate keywords for a given website:
1. Analyze the website: By analyzing the website make sure not to leave even a single corner of the website’s content and images. Extract all the important words from it. Prepare an excel sheet, make as much different phrases as possible from the extracted keywords. Eliminate all those phrases which do not have the words used on the web page. Repeat this process to get the most appropriate and relevant keywords list.
2. Industry Knowledge: To select industry specific and relevant keywords you should have the knowledge of that particular industry which the website belongs to. If you don’t have knowledge of that industry you can get it by visiting some of the same industry website.
3. Keyword Generator Tools: There are a number of tools available on web, which can help you getting the target keywords as per your requirement. Adwords keyword tools, Wordtracker are some of them where you can get the relevant keywords by just supplying one single keyword or your website URL.
4. Analyze Your Competitor: You should analyze the website of your competitor prior to finalize your own keywords. Check what keywords it has used to target its different pages. It will give you an idea to finally select the list of keywords for your website.
5. Keywords Popularity: The more a keyword will be popular the more it will be difficult to get a good ranking for that keyword. It is not true for all sites but only for new sites. So it is good to target the keywords which are not the most popular and competitive in beginning. You can go for it after 3-6 months of optimization when the site has the enough links and a position in search engines.

What To Do In On Page Optimization

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on June 17, 2008

On Page optimization is an important part of any search engine optimization campaign. If on page optimization of a website is done carefully keeping in mind some of the important factors then there is maximum chance of getting a high search engine ranking.
Things to do in On Page Optimization:
Title: Since all the sites are known to search engines by its title first, so an attractive and keyword rich title should be used to represent the website.
Head: This part of web page contains two important thing for SEO point of view. These are:
· Description Meta Tag: An effective description should include all the important Products/Services in the form of nicely written keywords format present on that particular page.
· Keywords Meta Tag: Use all the important keywords in this meta tag.

Body: Body of a website requires more concentration while optimizing it. The entire body part should check for errors. There are a number of sites available on web that can do this for you free. There are a number of automatic web page compilation programs which can give you the output of html error check within some seconds. Some more things that you can do in body part are:
· Alt Tag: According W3 guidelines all images on a web page must contain the Alt tag. It is beneficial in cases when the images are not displayed due to some problem, then the alternative text contained in the images are displayed to the users to understand what was there at the place of images.
· Anchor Text: Hyper-linking some important words or a group of words to direct users to some other destination is very good in regards of SEO. The words contained in that hyper-links are called Anchor Text. Since these words represent some other document by being linked so the Anchor text gets more value as compared to other simple texts present on a web page.
· Title in href: you should use title tag to briefly describe a link to some other page.
· Content: You should optimize the content of a web page keeping in mind the keywords you are using for that particular page. The content should look natural and informative so that a user wish to come again to your website. Using too many keywords in content is not considered a good SEO practice but a well written, quality and unique content is always favorable for getting a high ranking in SERPs. The content should be for visitors and not for search engines. If the content is unique, original and of some use then the Search engines will find them by themselves.

World’s First Search Engine For Hostels Launches

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on June 5, 2008

TFTHostels.com is the world’s first hostel search engine. It combines the directories of all major hostel booking websites into a single interface, saving visitors time and money. Visitors can:

* Search the largest directory of hostels in the world

* Compare rates, reviews and recommendations

* Check availability, specs and location

* Book the hostel of your choice by visiting the hostel booking website

TFTHostels.com is powered by Travelers for Travelers and currently in beta. The site says “The service is free, in speech as well as in beer. There are no additional fees, and we don’t fancy any hostel or booking service more than any other.”

We don’t know exactly what free “in speech as well as in beer” means, but it sounds good to us.

So how are the rates? Well we found a hotel in the Dominican Republic for $27 per night. We also found this guest house in Cuba for $44 per night (22 euros).

Casa Novo Guest House

“We rent 2s room in a very big 1900’s house with air conditioning, TV, fan, External window, fridge, private bathroom, hot water the 24 hours in the center of Havana. All our staff speaks english. You can enjoy 2 balconies. We are at 400 meters from the sea (malecon), 10 minutes walking from old Havana, 15 min. walking from Vedado and 5 min. walking from chinese town.”

Tips for Proper Website Search Engine Optimization

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on June 4, 2008

No matter what kind of website you have, one of your sole purposes is probably to get people to your site. After all, what’s the point of having a website if no one ever visits it? One of the most simple and key ways to get traffic to your web page is through search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization, known in the computer world as SEO, is a processed used by web page owners to increase the amount of traffic they get to their website by means of having a high ranking in a search engines results. Ultimately, most people will find your website through the use of a search engine. They type in their key words they are looking for, and the search engine provides them with results that match what they are looking for. The higher you rank in this search engine results, the better your chances of having people click on your website.

Search engine optimization helps to improve your rankings in these search engines and makes your site more accessible to Internet users. While SEO is the best way to increase the amount of traffic to your website, it can also be a little bit difficult to figure out and use properly. One of the best ways to use search engine optimization is to have content on your page that includes keywords that users are likely to search for that reflect your pages content. Start by making a list of keywords and key phrases that you think are best suited to your websites content, and then try and work those words onto your page, either in small blurbs, or larger page articles. Also, one of the best ways to get people to your website with an SEO keyword or phrase, is to make sure that one of those words or phrases is somewhere within your domain name, which will increase chances of it being picked up on a search engine.

Once you have determined which keywords and keyword phrases would best be suited for you website, it’s time to determine how often you should use them on your web page. Finding the right keyword density, or number of times the word should be on the page, can be a little tricky. If you don’t have enough key words, you’re not likely to rank high in the search engines. However, too many keywords and the search engine may think your website is a scam site, and will drop your ranking as well. Ideally, the perfect keyword density for a web page seems to be between one and six percent. Any lower or any higher, and you risk dropping in rank on the search engines and not being noticed.

If you are unsure of just how search engine optimization works, or how to find the right keyword density, don’t worry, you’re not out of the game yet. There are companies out there that will help to provide you with SEO content for your web page. There is a fee for this content, however it will definitely be worth it in the long run when you are ranking high on the search engine.

Having started numerous businesses in India web development is essential to stay competitive in any business.  But to really stay on top of the game I use India SEO services to keep my page ranked high in search engines.

Google Sitemap

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on May 30, 2008

The main advantage of the Google XML sitemap is that it allows you to specifically inform search engines about URL’s that appear on your website which are available for crawling. The Google sitemaps is especially beneficial for webmasters, as this enables them to include additional and more specific information regarding URL’s. For example when each website was last updated and how often it may change, this endorses the search engines to crawl each site in a more intelligent manner.

Sitemaps can be extremely advantageous when the user is unable to fully reach every area or region of the website by following links. To put this into perspective, basically any particular website where certain pages are not accessible through a search form would vastly improve from creating a sitemap and the concluding to submit this to search engines.

It’s essential that you are fully aware that the sitemap protocol will supplement, but will not completely replace the actual crawl-based mechanisms that search now use to locate URL’s.

It’s also imperative that you recognize this protocol does by no means guarantee that your web pages will be designated in search indexes.

Type of Links

Posted by searchegnineoptimizer on May 30, 2008

Reciprocal link

A reciprocal link is a mutual link between two objects, commonly between two websites to ensure mutual traffic. Example: Alice and Bob have websites. If Bob’s website links to Alice’s website, and Alice’s website links to Bob’s website, the websites are reciprocally linked. Website owners often submit their sites to reciprocal link exchange directories, in order to achieve higher rankings in the search engines. Reciprocal linking between websites is an important part of the search engine optimization process because Google uses link popularity algorithms (defined as the number of links that led to a particular page and the anchor text of the link) to rank websites for relevancy.

Three way linking

Three way linking (siteA -> siteB -> siteC -> siteA) is a special type of reciprocal linking. The attempt of this link building method is to create more “natural” links in the eyes of search engines. The value of links by three-way linking can then be better than normal reciprocal links, which are usually done between two domains.

Automated linking

In order to take advantage of the need for inbound links to rank well in the search engines, a number of automatic link exchange services have been launched. Members of these schemes will typically agree to have several links added to all their web pages in return for getting similar links back from other sites.

Link exchange

An alternative to the automated linking above is a link exchange forum, in which members will advertise the sites that they want to get links to, and will in turn offer reciprocal or three way links back to the sites that link to them. The links generated through such services are subject to editorial review.

One way linking

One way link is a term used among webmasters for link building methods. It is a hyperlink that points to a website without any reciprocal link; thus the link goes “one way” in direction. It is suspected by many industry consultants that this type of link would be considered more natural in the eyes of search engines. One Way links are also called Incoming Links or inbound links.

An effective way to build this type of one way linking is by distributing articles through content sites and article directories. These articles generally contain an About The Author box that contains a one-way link back to the author’s URL. When publishers use these articles, those one-way links help authors increase their page rank.

Multi way linking

Multi way linking is a technique used for website promotion whereby websites may create similar one way links that each involves 3 or more partner sites. This provides each website with a one way non-reciprocal link. This technique has evolved from reciprocal linking. According to Google and Yahoo, the latest search algorithms have evolved to hold less favor towards websites that contain a high percentage of reciprocated links, and a higher favor towards websites that maintain a high level of incoming non-reciprocated (one-way) links.

The term multi way simply refers to the fact that the link exchange is between 3 or more websites, however each link is singular by only pointing to one other website. Other means of linking that may increase your web presence may also include other indirect methods such as loading images, videos, content or RSS feeds from a third partners website.

Link campaign

Link campaigns are a form of online marketing and SEO. A business seeking to increase the number of visitors to its web site can ask its strategic partners, professional organizations, chambers of commerce, suppliers, and customers to add links from their web sites. A link campaign may involve mutual links back and forth between related sites, but it doesn’t have to require the reciprocation of links.

Incestuous linking

Incestuous linking is an SEO strategy used by a webmaster to promote a collection of their own web sites, or those of close friends.

Due to the domination of the search engine market by Google, and its underlying PageRank technology, sites are deemed to be more important if they have large numbers of inbound links. If those inbound links are also from highly ranked web sites, they will boost the web site further. With the take-up of blogging and social networking sites such as MySpace, this has resulted in lots of web sites that are inter-linked and can artificially improve the ranking of a web site without merit, i.e. without valuable or unique content.

When the sites are not directly owned, this is referred to as a web clique.

Overlinking

Overlinking in a webpage or another hyperlinked text is the characteristic of having too many hyperlinks.

It is characterized by:

  • A large proportion of the words in each sentence being rendered as links.
  • Links that have little information content, such as linking on specific years like 1995, or unnecessary linking of common words used in the common way, for which the reader can be expected to understand the word’s full meaning in context, without any hyperlink help.
  • A link for any single term is excessively repeated in the same article. “Excessive” is usually more than one link for the same term in a line or a paragraph, since in this case one or more duplicate links will almost certainly then appear needlessly on the viewer’s screen.

Underlinking

The opposites of overlinking are null linking and underlinking, which are phenomena in which hyperlinks are reduced to such a degree as to remove all pointers to a likely-needed context of an unusual term, in the text-area where the term occurs. Underlinking results whenever a reader encounters an odd term in an article (perhaps not even for the first time), and wants to briefly browse more deeply at that point, but he or she cannot without an extensive search of the article for a (possibly non-existent) instance of the linked term.

The extreme case of underlinking is a dead-end page, a page with no links at all. Usability experts discourage making dead-end pages.

Link doping

Link doping refers to the practice and effects of embedding a large number of gratuitous hyperlinks on a website, in exchange for reciprocal links. Mainly used when describing blogs, link doping usually implies that a person hyperlinks to sites he or she has never visited, in return for a place on the website’s blogroll, for the sole purpose of inflating the apparent popularity of his or her website. Since the search algorithms of many web directories and search engines rely on the number of hyperlinks to a website to determine its importance or influence, link doping can result in a high placement or ranking for the offending website.

Originally used in an essay published in Sobriquet Magazine and on Blogcritics.org, link doping has been confused with the related practice of excessive hyperlinking, also known as “link whoring”. While the two phrases may be used interchangeably to describe gratuitous linking, link doping carries the additional connotation of deliberately striving to attain a certain level of success for one’s website without having earned it through hard work (as an average athlete on steroids might perform better than a naturally gifted athlete not on performance-enhancing drugs).

Free for All linking

A Free For All (FFA) link page is a web page set up ostensibly to improve the search engine placement of a particular web site. Webmasters typically will use software to place a link to their site on hundreds of FFA sites, hoping that the resulting incoming links will increase the ranking of their site in search engines. Experts in SEO techniques do not place much value on FFAs. First, most FFAs only maintain a small number of links for a short time, too short for most search engines to pick up. Second, the high “human” traffic to FFA sites is almost completely other webmasters visiting the site to place their own links manually. Finally, search engine algorithms count more than link numbers, they also check relevancy which the unrelated links on FFA sites do not have. Another drawback to FFAs is the amount of spam e-mail webmasters will receive from members of the FFA. Using an FFA can be considered a form of spamdexing.

Link popularity

Link popularity is a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites that link to a specific site on the World Wide Web. It is an example of the move by search engines towards off-the-page-criteria to determine quality content. In theory, off-the-page-criteria adds the aspect of impartiality to search engine rankings. Link popularity plays an important role in the visibility of a web site among the top of the search results. Indeed, some search engines require at least one or more links coming to a web site, otherwise they will drop it from their index.

Search engines such as Google use a special link analysis system to rank web pages. Citations from other WWW authors help to define a site’s reputation. The philosophy of link popularity is that important sites will attract many links. Content-poor sites will have difficulty attracting any links. Link popularity assumes that not all incoming links are equal, as an inbound link from a major directory carries more weight than an inbound link from an obscure personal home page. In other words, the quality of incoming links counts more than sheer numbers of them.

Link bait

Link bait is any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. Matt Cutts defines link bait as anything “interesting enough to catch people’s attention.”[3] Link bait can be an extremely powerful form of marketing as it is viral in nature.

Link bait in search engine optimization

The quantity and quality of inbound links are two of the many metrics used by a search engine ranking algorithm to rank a website. Link bait creation falls under the task of link building, and aims to increase the quantity of high-quality, relevant links to a website. Part of successful linkbaiting is devising a mini-PR campaign around the release of a link bait article so that bloggers and social media users are made aware and can help promote the piece in tandem. Social media traffic can generate a substantial amount of links to a single web page. Sustainable link bait is rooted in quality content.

Types of link bait

Although there are no clear-cut subdivisions within link bait, many attempt to divide them into types of hooks. This is a short list of some of the most common approaches with brief descriptions:

  • Informational Hooks – Provide information that a reader may find very useful. Some rare tips and tricks or any personal experience through which readers can benefit.
  • News Hooks – Provide fresh information and garner citations and links as the news spreads.
  • Humor Hooks – Tell a funny story or a joke. A bizarre picture of your subject or mocking cartoons can also prove to be link bait.
  • Evil Hooks – Saying something unpopular or mean may also yield a lot of attention. Writing about something that is not appealing about a product or a popular blogger. Provide strong reasons for it.
  • Tool Hooks – Create some sort of tool that is useful enough that people link to it.

Forum signature linking

Forum signature linking is a technique used to build backlinks to a website. This is the process of using forum communities that allow outbound hyperlinks in their member’s signature. This can be a fast method to build up inbound links to a website; it can also produce some targeted traffic if the website is relevant to the forum topic. It should be stated that forums using the nofollow attribute will have no actual Search Engine Optimization value.
